Treating TMJ with Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to reduce pain and improve mobility.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to reduce pain and improve mobility. It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points along the body.

How Can Acupuncture Help My TMJ Pain?

Research shows that acupuncture can significantly reduce muscular jaw pain and improve jaw function by:

  • Reducing pain in your jaw, face, and head
  • Decreasing muscle tenderness and tension
  • Improving the jaw’s mobility

What Happens During an Acupuncture Session?

Very thin acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body.

These needles are significantly thinner than needles used for injections. These points may include:

  • Areas around your jaw and face
  • Points on your hands, arms, legs, or feet
  • Points on your head and neck
The needles are typically left in place for about 30 minutes. Dr. Stein may gently manipulate them to achieve a sensation called "de-qi," which some people describe as a mild tingling, heaviness, or warmth. This sensation is normal and indicates the treatment is working.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Most treatment plans involve one treatment weekly for approximately 4-10 weeks.

Some patients, however may need additional sessions depending on their response and/or how long they have had the symptoms.  Many patients notice improvement after just a few sessions, though it may take a few weeks to notice the full benefit. Dr. Stein will work with you to determine the best treatment schedule for your specific condition.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a trained, licensed practitioner such as Dr. Stein using sterile needles.

Side effects are typically mild and may include:

  • Minor bruising or soreness at needle sites
  • Temporary lightheadedness
  • Mild fatigue after treatment

Serious complications are extremely rare when acupuncture is performed properly.

Is Acupuncture Covered By My Insurance?

Some insurance policies cover these treatments, but many do not.

Either way, the initial consult with Dr. Stein is covered by insurance as long as Dr. Stein is a participating provider in your network. She participates in most major networks. Prior to your first treatment, our office will confirm with your insurance company what benefits you have.

Can Acupuncture Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Yes.

Acupuncture often works well alongside other TMJ treatments including but not limited to:

  • Jaw exercises and stretching
  • Physical therapy or manual therapy
  • Stress management techniques

Research suggests that combining acupuncture with other therapies may provide better results than using any single treatment alone.
